A room that can grow as baby does. That’s what this nursery says to me.

The pastel-hued Amy Butler floral fabric on the square throw pillow keeps the space youthful without being too cutesy, while playfulness comes through in the contrasting velvet pillow, bold red footstool and gold accents. Then the crisp, white, modern rocking chair ties it all together into such a chic nursery that won’t need a massive decor overhaul over the years.

Now, as a mom of two young sons, I know that aesthetics doesn’t exactly help when you’ve got a newborn in your arms at 2am. But that’s what makes this design so great. Michelle of Ten June not only nailed the look of her little girl’s nursery, but picked the perfect functional pieces as well. So let’s review those 5 nursery decor accents that can both support your night-waking parental duties and acts as decor that delights in the daytime too.

1. A Chair. No matter your baby feeding method or who’s doing the feeding, you’re going to need a comfortable place to do it. And this chair just happens to rock (quite literally) both in style and comfort.

2. A Footstool/ottoman. Feedings and soothing sessions are most often conducted by a tired person. Having somewhere to put your feet up for the duration is a huge plus.

3. A Throw Pillow. Guaranteed, you or your baby will use a throw pillow when you’re snuggled together in that chair. Bonus if it’s one of these a beautiful ones made by Lacey Placey.

4. Nightstand/Side Table. Whether it’s for session supplies like burp cloths, binkies and bottles, or to keep mom or dad hydrated through the marathon, you’ll absolutely need a little “station.”

5. Lamp. This one’s to avoid fumbling around in the dark. I recommend a lamp with a dimmer so you can set the brightness to your mood (and baby’s status at that moment!)

Huge thanks, and congrats, to Michelle, who graciously shared her nursery photos with us (and is expecting her little one any moment)! And definitely check out Lacey’s gorgeous throw pillows (she’s the one who made the Amy Butler fabric one above!)
