I didn’t witness Emily Henderson’s rise to HGTV fame on “DesignStar.” And I’ve never stopped watching “House Hunters” or “Property Brothers” long enough to catch her next show, “Secrets from a Stylist.” But I have been reading her blog over the past few months. I suppose my ears perked up a bit and I identified with her when she started sprinkling in personal pregnancy, birth, newborn and new mom talk, in addition to stellar interior design advice and DIY projects. Whatever the reason, I’m taken with her. And this video about how to mix patterns is a really useful one. Watch.
Yeah. I haven’t exactly been playing by these design rules. Certainly not as I have been putting patterns and colors together for you guys lately. The fabric colors I chose may have worked, but I was clearly pitting patterns against one another. So the biggest take-away I got from Emily’s video is to balance the scale of patterns. If you’ve got one big floral or geometric pattern, avoid another print of similar size and instead incorporate something much smaller in scale. So let’s try this again. This time around I took fabric and color palette requests from a few readers, and with Emily’s advice in mind, tried to keep it simple while incorporating texture with faux fur, velvet and microsuede. Go easy.
